Dr. Irvine's Story
Dr. Irvine graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1994 with a Bachelors or Science. He then completed his medical degree in 1998. At that point in his career, he was accepted into the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency Program completing 5 years of residency in 2003. Upon completion of the 5 year residency, he started working at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital on the Traumatic Brain Injury, Stroke, Orthopedic and Burn rehabilitation units. He worked as a consultant in the acute care hospital assessing patient readiness for rehabilitation in the University of Alberta Burn and Traumatic Brain Injury Units at both the University of Alberta and Royal Alexander Hospital. During this period, he was doing consulting work at Millard Health and interventional pain management at community radiology clinic.

In about 2005, Dr. Irvine started up his on clinical practice. In 2007 with some colleagues, they expanded the practice to involve interventional pain management in the community. During this process, HealthPointe Medical was established as the first physiatry operated clinic able to do interventional pain management in Alberta. Dr. Irvine and his colleagues continued to expand HealthPointe with new physiatrist and training these new physiatrists in interventional pain management.

In 2017, HealthPointe Clinic was relocated from the Hys Centre downtown to a larger facility on the southside of Edmonton. Throughout this time, Dr. Irvine continued to work in chronic pain, medication, and interventional pain management. He was also involved in clinical teaching at the University of Alberta with medical students and physiatry residents. He was also very busy working in the medicolegal environment.

In 2022, Dr. Irvine decided, that after 20 years of working in the area of chronic pain and the persistent long waitlists, to enter the private sector. He opted out of the Alberta Healthcare Insurance Plan (AHCIP) on May 2022 and recently started working privately in January 2023. With his wealth of experience in chronic pain management, his goal is to establish earlier assessment and management of acute injury. The earlier intervention would allow for quick access to education and instruct acutely injured patients with tools to manage their injuries in cooperation with their therapists.

Dr. Irvine encountered some challenges in providing private services. The demand for early access and management of acute and chronic injuries was lower than anticipated, and promoting the service was challenging due to limitations in medical profession marketing. As a result, he resumed providing services to the public system through AHCIP in June 2024.
